Setting Achievable Goals For Success

In order to achieve something, the first thing you should develop is a goal. Without a short term and a long term goal, the likeliness of you following through with something you want is highly unlikely. Trying to achieve something without setting a goal is like walking blindly through the dessert in search of treasure, but without having a map or any idea what you are really looking for.

The first step is to plan out a short term goal and a long term goal. For example, your short term goal may be to finish 3 classes this semester with a B average. This is a great short term goal as it is something you can achieve within a reasonable time frame without setting your expectations too high. While you should strive for success, you should start your goals at a point you know you can achieve and gradually build up to bigger and more difficult short term goals. The great benefit to short term goals is they give you a feeling of achieving something with each successful goal. This will motivate and drive you to put more effort into achieving your long term goal. Once you’ve completed your first short term goal you should set a new short term goal that will ultimately continue you on your path to your long term goal.

Second of all, we need to set a long term goal. You can set numerous long term goals to be set over long time frames, but for the sake of this article, we will focus on having one long term goal. To continue with our short term goal I will base this example on an education based goal. A good long term goal would be to graduate from University with a Bachelors in Computer Science with a 3.33 GPA. This is also a reasonable long term goal as it is something that will be achievable after successful completing numerous short term goals.

In the end, without goals, the chances of succeeding at anything, including life are quite slim. Goals aid in deriving a reason to succeed; they give you something to strive for; the reason to keep on pushing. Goals give you a reason to want to continue on, because you know the things you have worked so hard to achieve are just around the corner. Whether it is an education you strive for, saving money to buy that first apartment, or even something as simple as losing that baby fat, you are only a short term goal away.

Home Remedies For Flu

Flu is a respiratory infection caused by a variety of flu viruses. Flu is contagious and if you’re around someone who coughs or sneezes, or simply touch any object already touched by someone contaminated with flu, you’re bound to contract the infection.

Flu symptoms are easy to detect though they may appear few days later. Flu spreads at the slightest contact and before you feel the symptoms on yourself, you might have passed it to others. Symptoms include – body aches, chills, dry cough, fever, headache, sore throat and stuffy nose.

To prevent the flu bug, keep in mind the following -
-Get a flu shot / vaccine.

-If there is flu epidemic in air, avoid crowded places like cinema halls, theatres, shopping centers, etc as virus spreads easily.

-Keep distance from people who sneeze and cough.

-Give up smoking and drinking alcohol as it can injure your respiratory tract and impair your resistance, making you more susceptible to flu.

-Wash your hands frequently in order to reduce your chance of infection.

-Reduce stress as stressed people are more prone to falling ill easily.

-Include low sweets diet and avoid fried foods.

-Avoid exposure to dust, chemicals as well as sudden and extreme temperature changes.

Since flu spreads at the slightest of contact, one should stay at home till fully recovered. It is best to rest in the bed as you will feel sick and tired to do anything else. If you are doing work despite being sick, you’re prone to more complications.

Liquids are important as you can get the much needed nutrients when you don’t feel like eating and it also keeps you from being dehydrated. Drink lots of liquids like water, soups, veg or non veg and other fluids like fruit juices. Beet and carrot juice, both are rich in nutrients. Fruit juice mixed with water in equal quantity and dash of sugar provides the necessary glucose.

By humidifying your room there will be less discomfort of a cough, sore throat or dry nasal passages. If you’re blowing your nose continuously, it will be sore and red. Lubricate your nostrils with petroleum jelly products to decrease the irritation. For tired achy muscles, ease away the pain with a warm compress. Soak your feet in hot water to alleviate any headache or nasal congestion.

Ensure that your room has plenty of fresh air supply all the times. Prevent chills by wearing warm, close fitting clothes. Ask someone to give you a back rub as it activates the immune system to fight the flu. During flu, one should eat lightly. Snack on fruits, cereals, boiled food, etc.

If a sore or scratchy throat accompanies the flu infection, get relief by gargling with salt water solution. It will wash out any secretions collected in your throat.

Take a warm tbsp of honey mixed with lemon at night to get quick relief.

Warm water mixed with lemon and honey is good to loosen phlegm.

Gargle daily with 1 drop of each of tea tree oil and lemon mixed in glass of warm water. Stir well and do not swallow.

Add 10-20 drops of either tea tree, eucalyptus, lemon or lavender oil to your hot water bath. This helps your immune system fight the viral infect and ease your symptoms.

Take 1 tbsp of lukewarm honey mixed with 1/4 tsp of cinnamon powder daily for 3-4 days. It strengthens the immune system and protects the body from bacteria and viral attacks.

Juices of apple, pear, cranberry, pomegranate and dark grapes are often recommended for combating flu as they have properties that work against congestion and runny nose.

Help For People Who Struggle To Sleep At Night

Do you find it hard to get a good nights sleep? Are you looking into the different ways of helping you to obtain more sleep at night? Is stress affecting your sleep patterns? A couple of years ago I am the type of person who would have answered yes to all of these questions. In this article I give advice which may help other people to have a better nights sleep.

I am somebody who loves going to bed and who loves going to sleep. I also feel that I need at least seven hours of sleep per night. If I do not manage to sleep for this amount of time I wake up in a very negative state of mind and am unable to work throughout the day to my best level.

The problem that I have is that I am somebody who easily becomes stressed. This can happen over the smallest of things and I tend to see these problems as much bigger than they actually are. I am also quite a paranoid person and used to always worry about what other people thought and were saying about me.

This stress and over anxiety often affected my speech and I tried many things to help me with the situation. Counting sheep did not work and other methods that I read about were also of little use. I would often see the clock by my bed change from three to four, to five and to six in the morning. This would get me down as I knew that this would result in me having a bad day when I eventually got out of bed.

It was as if my brain was unable to switch off, my mind was always thinking and worrying and could not shut down or relax enough for me to fall asleep.

A friend of mine then recommended that I needed to completely tire out my body before even attempting to go to bed and to sleep. He advised that I should perhaps do a lot more exercise, possibly going for a swim in the early evening and then for a long jog a few hours later. I could also purchase some type of home gym and have a good workout at around 10pm. By doing this he suggested my body would have no choice but to sleep.

I gave my friends advice a go and am very happy to report that it worked for me.

Whether you are an Entrepreneur or Business Professional there are many things you do each week that would benefit from a strategic system to help you be more effective, reduce errors and stress, help you enjoy your time at work and give you more time to have fun outside of work.

Strategic systems are not static; they allow you to be flexible, creative, and spontaneous, and because they help you look at situations with a clear focus and a specific intention you can easily achieve your desired results. When you develop your strategic system you begin by setting an intention for what would be the best outcome in this area.

If we use the example of incoming mail both email and snail mail. An intention you might set would be to handle it only once, sort it effortlessly, and help you leverage your actions for greater success.

Once you set your intention and define the focus you can develop a strategic system to achieve that intention. With the snail mail those systems might include scheduling fifteen minutes a day to look through the mail when it comes in. The system could include a three tier sorting; things to throw away, things to file, and things to take action on. You can set up further systems so an action required on the mail will automatically be handled. In the case of accounts receivable or payable, answering an inquiry, scheduling a meeting, or call back…

Your systems would also include a file for reading material or reference and for handling mail that needs to be redirected to someone else who can handle it more effectively.

With the email you will want to have a similar sorting system. Filters can be helpful for directing the different email to corresponding boxes of important, reference, action, spam…

You can also have response emails set up for situations or questions that are frequently requested. This allows you to customize each response from a pre drafted template; cutting down your response time but allowing you to address each situation in the most efficient way.

Once you start designing strategic systems you will find that it’s beneficial to keep adding to the system. One process will lead to another and each step of a process will be incorporated into the strategic system. This will allow you to move from your definition of success in a given area to implementation of the best processes to achieve it. Your actions will flow seamlessly from one strategic system to the next and nothing will be misplaced or forgotten.

The process of building one strategic system on another is an excellent way to boost productivity, reduce costs, boost employee and customer satisfaction and increase your profits.

Because your strategic systems are fluid you can easily update them when new situations occur or when you want to change or improve your definition of success on a given situation.

Make sure your strategic systems define success, include an intention, are simple, clear, and updated regularly.

Here’s a simple 8 step process to help you create your Strategic Systems:

1. Define what success in a specific area looks like
2. Set your intention for the outcome of the Strategic System
3. Keep it focused and simple
4. Get it out of your head and on paper: you want to develop a step by step blueprint
5. Look for ways to leverage one strategic system with another
6. Have a template for tasks
7. Keep it fluid and dynamic and update the strategic system at least once a month
8. Keep it in PLAIN SIGHT; if it’s in a drawer it won’t be effective

You can develop Strategic Systems for everything that you need to do at work. Customer service, order fulfillment, meeting agendas, marketing, client referrals, telephone scripts, sales information, inventory, peer review, conflict resolution, training proficiencies, matching job outcomes to job openings, employee feedback, new product or service development, converting web visitors to sales…

Strategic Systems are powerful because they get the ideas and information out of your head and onto paper. They allow you to see the big picture and focus on a fluid procession of details that help you achieve big picture goals. This approach will get you working on your business and not in your business. Because you have clearly determined your definition of success in each area you can use inspired actions not reactions to effectively get things done.

All of these benefits lead to the ultimate benefit; you have more time and can have more fun because things are running smoothly. You don’t always have to be there because the process is clearly laid out in the strategic system manual for each area.

Start small and develop the powerful habit of creating a strategic system for each area of your business.

Does your business card really represent you?

Although it might seem like overblown hyperbole, a business card is really a window into the soul of your company.

That’s because a business card not only tells prospective clients exactly what it is your company does, but provides them with a visual sense of how you do it and – more importantly – how well you do it.

Here’s where it might be helpful for you to pull out your old business card, take a good hard look at it and try to figure out what others might be seeing.

Is your card poorly designed or cluttered with useless information that makes it hard to read? Is there anything on the card that jumps out at you and grabs your attention, or is it just another one of them standard business card you wouldn’t think twice about tossing in the trash if someone had handed it to you?

Of course, no one wants to give out a business card that is overly flashy or loud just for the sake of making an impact. That would be ridiculous. But unless your goal is to come across as just another faceless entrepreneur, you need to make sure your business card is doing you and your company justice.

Keep in mind that on a functionality level, all business cards should be legible, informative and reflect you unique business personality – regardless of whether you are a certified contortionist with a runaway circus or a chartered accountant.

Easy-to-read fonts that are no smaller than 10 points are a must. Including your name, telephone and fax number, e-mail address and company web site are also musts. But anything other than that is really up to you. If you’re in the construction business, using a thick, credit-card-like card stock – instead of the flimsy paper variety – might give clients a sense of your solid workmanship. If you’re running a daycare, a glossy card with rainbow-coloured graphics may work better for you than a black and white text-heavy card. That type of business card would probably work better for a mortician.

Although no one knows your business better than you, figuring out just the right personality for your business card is something you might want to discuss with a graphics designer.

Thinking up four or five adjectives that best describe your company might make it easier for them to incorporate those traits into your business card design and make sure your business card isn’t sending mixed messages.

Can You Do CPR?

We’ve all seen it done in the movies and TV, some one collapses and stops breathing and a passerby or medic performs CPR and miraculously they come back to health coughing and spluttering, but do you know how to do it? ….And hand on your heart would you like to perform mouth to mouth on a complete stranger?

We’ll you mightn’t have to with a new technique that was developed at the University in Arizona and reported to triple the survival rate. This technique involves hard and fast compressions (at least 100 chest compressions per minute) on the chest cavity as the main priority with a person who collapses from cardiac arrest. By doing the chest compressions as a priority even before putting in a breathing tube paramedics have found that the patients suffered less brain damage as the blood was still kept flowing around the body and to the brain by force of the chest compressions.

It was found that it was very easy for the average man or woman to use this technique (in as quick as half an hour) as there was no having to remember the ratio of breaths to compressions and also the fact of using mouth to mouth put a lot of people off doing CPR.

It should be noted that this technique should only be used in the event of a suspected cardiac arrest and never used on children…and people collapsing from blocked airways by food or near drowning, for these cases the new technique won’t work and the old CPR technique should be used.

Surviving The Digital Economy Meltdown!

The bloom is off the rose, the roosters are coming home to roost. Use whatever metaphor fits your business or culture! But get the net/net – the “new digital economy” is starting to get down to some real fundamentals. Don’t get caught in the downturn, learn to grow organically using targeted marketing and customer referenceability. New rules for surviving the meltdown:

1. Cash is king. Husband your marketing resources as much as you can by driving hard bargains with all suppliers – or perish the thought, use equity to leverage your cash on hand. If your vendor/partners take some equity (as we do in our clients), then you know they are really committed to the success of your company! And with the downturn in the IPO market, you may be saving yourself some money in the long run.

2. Love your customers. Be absolutely committed to your customers; do what it takes to make them successful in the marketplace and they will respond in kind by recommending your firm to members of their community. And, yes, you can ask them if they will recommend other potential clients.

3. Give your customers some equity in your company. This marries them to your firm (see two above) and helps to motivate them to help your company grow and prosper.

4. Co-brand or partner where you can. Meaning, find a partner in your market segment who is doing well and develop a revenue share (classic win/win) model which helps both of you grow by sharing market information.

5. Get digital in your marketing processes if your business model is focused on delivering goods and services via the web. Every marketing type is recommending opt-in e-mail this Fall, but they are right, it works well. Prices are dropping. YesMail, for instance, has an $150 gross CPM Holiday Promo underway for most of the categories with about 7M opt-in addresses available!

6. Search Engine positioning/ranking still provides the best ROI of any interactive marketing. But you have to be patient and persistent in your processes. Build the right keywords and integrate these with your site content, then manually submit your pages to the top tier Search Engines. Or, if the sheer complexity of the task overwhelms you, then hire a specialized marketing firm to do this.

7. Build sound fundamentals into your business. Grizzled marketing veterans like your author experienced the post PC downturn in the mid 80s. I don’t think we are going to see such a radical meltdown in our new economy, but look at the declining valuations via the stock markets, slowing PC penetration, and Internet access signups. Yes, it’s still a solid global economy with plenty of niche marketing opportunities for growth, but the “digital high tide” is starting to recede. So don’t count on mega million advertising revenue as your “path to profitability”, the VC buzz word du jour. Develop fundamental profit centers in your business.

8. There are lots of free marketing resources out there but be wary of the proliferation of snake oil salesmen (sorry John D). There is a new industry springing up of people who are hyping free or low cost ways to instant riches. Here’s how I set my hype filter: if it sounds to good to be true, then it is, so click your browser and move on.

9. Build a web site that’s popular, one that’s linked and listed by many others sites. This helps you get high listings via Google, HotBot and other top tier search engines. Here is a free resource that helps you setup and participate in a LinkPopularity program. It can be set up in a couple of minutes via the Fantomaster.com web site.

10. Recruit and hire with an eye to the variances in the market. Meaning, don’t hire until you absolutely have to and use outsourced companies for jobs which are not part of your company’s core attributes. This saves money in the long run and lets you quickly scale up your business when and as you need to, in turn minimizing your fixed human resources and/or payroll costs.

Using Invoice Discounting For Cash Flow

Invoice discounting is basically the same as invoice factoring: it involves selling your invoices that are not yet due to be paid to a company at a discount. The discount provides the company purchasing your invoices with their profit; but by receiving cash now for your invoices, invoice discounting enables you to:

* Meet emergency expenses * Pay suppliers early to take advantage of early-payment discounts * Take on time-sensitive new projects * Expand your business more quickly * Pay for costly advertising that will bring in more sales * Beef up your business prior to crucial time points

Invoice discounting involves finding a company that will purchase your accounts payable at a discount that depends on the length of your payment window. The discount generally ranges from about 1.5% to 5% for every ten days until payment is due, with the lower discount percentages going to the most creditworthy of the companies that owe you money. Your company’s creditworthiness has no bearing on this sale. And with invoice discounting, you can sell part or all of any reasonably creditworthy debt.

You can either sell your invoices on a notification basis which means the company that purchases your invoice also collects on it or you can work out terms with the company purchasing your invoices on a self-collect. The difference is when it’s a notification sale, your debtors will pay the invoice discounting company directly. If you collect debts yourself and then forward to the invoice discounting company, your customers will never know that you sold their invoices to another company. It is easier to sell invoices on a notification basis because the invoice discounting company knows, this way they will get their money back in a timely fashion.

The main advantage of selling invoices on a notification basis is that the factor, or invoice discounting company, is then responsible for collecting the debt and assumes all the credit risk. The factor is often a broker, not the company purchasing your invoices. Using invoice discounting on a regular basis to fund your company can eliminate the need for staffing a credit and collection department, which equals another saving for you.

Other Ways to Use Invoice Discounting

If you establish an ongoing relationship with an invoice discounting company, you can even establish the equivalent of a line of credit based on your invoices. Instead of using all the funds forwarded to you in payment for your invoice, you take what you need and leave the rest with the invoice discounting company. The discounting company allows your account to accrue interest, and you can draw on the account as you need cash.

If you’re not ready to sell invoices outright, you can try using accounts receivable as collateral for a loan. This involves getting a bank to accept both your credit and your debtors’ credit, and then collecting cash equal to at least half and up to ninety percent of your accounts receivable. This is a little cheaper than invoice discounting, but it can also be both slower and less flexible.
