The Premium Movie Channel Paradigm Could Soon Face Extinction

October 31st, 2008

The article sent shockwaves throughout Wall Street, as the stock prices for both TiVo and Netflix shot up. Last September, a Newsweek article reported that TiVo and Netflix might be getting together to produce a true form of video-on-demand (VOD). Last week, a Netflix official fueled this speculation by dropping hints about a potential joint venture. TiVo, the original and premier provider of digital video recorders (DVRs) in the U.S., would eventually provide instantaneous online access to the entire DVD library (currently more than 35,000 films) of Netflix, the nation’s number one mail order video rental service. This would be accomplished via a broadband internet connection to specially equipped TiVo DVRs. This development could also spell the beginning of the end for premium movie services like HBO, Showtime, and Starz. First, let’s put all of this into perspective with a little history of the premium services. Home Box Office (HBO) was the first premium service, debuting in 1975. It was one of the first channels beamed from a satellite and carried by cable operators across the country. As its popularity grew in the late 1970’s, several other premium services like Showtime, Cinemax, The Movie Channel, as well as some lesser known premium services came into existence. The industry started consolidating in the early 1980’s as HBO bought Cinemax, Showtime bought The Movie Channel, and those lesser known services went belly-up. In the early 1990’s, the Starz-Encore networks debuted to compete with the HBO and Showtime networks. During the mid-1990’s, as satellite services such as Directv and Dish Network debuted, the premium services began offering “multiplexed” channels, i.e., multiple channels of HBO, Showtime, Cinemax, The Movie Channel, and Starz-Encore for the price of one. Unfortunately, the number of movie choices didn’t increase. Those services just began to air their same libraries of movies at different times on their various multiplexed channels. There are hundreds of movies at local video stores that have never played (and will never play) on the premium channels while there are a comparatively small number of others that have played on these channels thousands of times. That has always been the major weakness of the premium services. Multiplexing did not fix this problem. Several market tests of VOD were conducted during the 1980’s and the early 1990’s but, because the technology was rather primitive, it did not catch on with consumers. By the late 1990’s, it finally seemed ready and lots of promises were made about the brave new world of VOD. The cable companies were talking about veritable online video stores, which were going to put Blockbuster, et al, out of business. Unfortunately, the reality of VOD has never lived up to its hype. The stuff the cable companies are currently passing off as VOD is nothing more than a glorified version of pay-per-view or a DVR. For the most part, their VOD offerings aren’t any different from the stuff currently playing on the premium channels and/or on pay-per-view. This is what I call “faux VOD.” How lame! Fortunately, led by the apparent impending TiVo-Netflix undertaking, the landscape is about to change and a new era of genuine VOD is about to be ushered in. PC-based broadband VOD services like Cinemanow (www.cinemanow.com) and Movielink (www.movielink.com) have been up and running for several years and are about to broaden their offerings. In addition, SBC Communications and EchoStar Communications have already announced that they are teaming up to provide an online-to-TV VOD service this year, while several similar phone company-satellite operator projects are still in the negotiations stage. Also, Internet Protocol Television (IPTV) platforms, offering hundreds of television channels via a broadband internet connection to a TV set-top box, will be coming online this year. One of the major features of these services will be advanced VOD technology. Microsoft has developed its own version of IPTV technology. See Microsoft’s website (www.microsolft.com/tv) for details. The nation’s two largest phone companies, Verizon and SBC, plan to utilize Microsoft’s technology in the rollout of their respective IPTV platforms later this year.

Not to be outdone, several smaller companies also plan to compete in the broadband-to-TV market. Akimbo Systems (www.akimbo.com) debuted its service last fall and is currently in the process of expanding. Similar ventures such as DAVETV (www.dave.tv), TimeShift TV, (www.timeshiftv.com), and VCinema (www.vcinema.com) plan to enter the market later this year. All of these companies plan to offer almost unlimited amounts of movies, TV shows, sports, specialty programming, and international programs via a set-top box interface between a broadband connection and a TV set. This programming will be culled from the vast internet universe and made available for TV viewing. For a more detailed description of these services, see my related article entitled, “The Coming Television Revolution.”

If nothing else, all of these developments should compel cable companies to offer a much more competitive form of VOD. Comcast, one of the leading cable providers and a partner with Sony in its recent purchase of the MGM movie library, is now in the process of rolling out its advanced VOD platform. The other cable companies are sure to be following suit real soon. Meanwhile, the premium services have still been slogging along. The premium channel paradigm has long outlived its original usefulness and has only been able to hang around because of the lack of a good VOD system thus far. The only thing really going for the premiums right now is their award-winning original programming; including series’ like “The Sopranos”, “Dead Like Me”, and “Six Feet Under.” Perhaps the premium services could morph into original-programming-only services in order to survive. However, they’d have to seriously increase the number of series’ (and the number of episodes of each) they produce. Perhaps they could also carry longer and/or alternative versions of programs already aired on broadcast television and basic cable. In addition, they would have to find a way to lower their subscription rates. I’m not sure all of that would be feasible. One thing I do know for sure is that people would not continue to subscribe to the premium channels for their movie content once they could conveniently pull up virtually any movie or TV show they wanted, any time they wanted.

Midwest Patterns Profiled in Reed Business’ InMFG including ERP Software Encompix

October 30th, 2008

Technology solutions are designed to help these manufacturing heroes, yet the results are mixed. Selecting the correct technology can be tantamount to an adding a group of employees; selecting the wrong technology can bring the enterprise to a screeching halt.

Rob Stull is IT Manager, Quality Assurance Manager who noted, “Our Y2K quick purchase of an ERP (Enterprise Resource Planning) software system turned out to be a poor choice as far as the company goes. The ERP company was bought shortly after our purchase and then put out of business. This left MPI without support or upgrades or an opportunity for continuous improvement…which did not match our lean goals.”

Thomas R. Cutler, the nation’s leading manufacturing journalist profiled Midwest Patterns (MPI), a custom moldmaking manufacturer based in Quincy, IL. The feature article can be found http://www.reedlink.com/SingleArticle~ContentId~56398~pub~IP.html or www.trcutlerinc.com. Stull insisted that ETO (engineer-to-order) issues characterized Midwest Patterns business, “The need for flexibility in all we do was central in finding the best technology solution. On-time delivery is critical to Midwest Patterns. Saving time and paperwork was essential…We have molds to build not paperwork!” Midwest Patterns’ selection of a new ERP system came down to a choice between two software providers; Encompix (www.encompix.com) won due to its flexibility and its Engineer-to-Order appropriateness. Stull noted that, “The interface has a simplistic layout which is less intimidating to the users. Let’s face it, not all users have degrees in computer science and you need to make them comfortable in their environment.”

Midwest Patterns has a philosophy that is indicative of other ETO manufacturers working to achieve a competitive advantage. Stull suggests with the commitment to delivery and service, “Most companies remain loyal if they get what they want and get it early. Service above all!”

Mike Merten advised Midwest Patterns in the new technology selection. Merten noticed how many functions Stull fulfilled at the company. “They do not have a large IT staff. Stull does double (sometimes triple) duty as Quality Assurance Manager, IT Manager and whatever other duties might be thrown his way. This made the selection of the proper ERP system critical for them.” Encompix www.encompix.com Roger Meloy 513-733-0066

Video Podcasting – Big Thing

October 29th, 2008

Podcasting, a term coined formerly for the free downloading of audio segments onto Apple iPods, now is being expanded to include video as well. The new iPods that are video enabled are expected to bring in a flurry of video revolution and set off a whole new wave of media. Although currently radio shows are the most popular Podcasts, TV shows, humorous videos, and other forms of media are expected to become the new craze as the new iPod video-enabled units hit the shelves.

A rather interesting detail, however, in lies as to what sorts of video Podcasts are expected to be the most popular. Religious sermon videos are expected to be big, especially since they have a large audio Podcast following, as well as certain forms of audio shows that are expected to transfer to video as well. Another media that is expected to get big through video Podcasting is pornography. Although the initial quality that the new iPods can display is still under consideration, pornography is still expected to be a big Podcasting favorite when the new iPods become available.

What kind of new age are we getting ourselves into? Nobody really knows. But, needless to say, this new technology and the ability it brings to have almost limitless amounts of audio and video files at our fingertips 24/7 is definitely very intriguing. The leaps and bounds made by Apple and its iPod are only the beginning of future technological advancements involving little devices such as these. The future awaits.

ERP ETO Manufacturing Software in Metalforming Magazine

October 29th, 2008

October issue of Metalforming Magazine (www.metalformingmagazine.com) focuses on ERP in the ETO environment.

To win business, ETO metalforming manufacturers must provide accurate estimates and quotations to a demanding customer base. Often, payment for a project is only received after it is installed and operating on a customer’s site. Following the sale, these firms must provide warranty tracking and aftermarket services, including the sale of spare parts, which may constitute a significant share of the company’s business. The institute (www.etoinstitute.org) provides resources, discussion boards and tools to assist ETO metalforming companies in overcoming their unique challenges. Challenges faced by Engineer-to-Order (ETO) and project-based metalforming manufacturers that cannot be resolved by traditional manufacturing systems are profiled.

Designing and building complex products to exact customer specifications frequently involve long lead times and heavy engineering content. Quantifiable results for a metalforming conveying manufacturer such as HMM, following an ETO ERP system implementation, should include reduction in costs by 30 percent; increase in margin by 10 to 25 percent; 100-percent revenue growth with little additional indirect cost; improved change control resulting in $250,000 in additional revenue; reduced delivery cycle times by 40 percent; greater visibility and control over project costs; reduced costs in one department by 50 percent; reduced accounting month-end closing time; and elimination of non-value-added activities resulting in savings of more than $100,000 annually.

Harry Major Machine & Tool Co. (HMM), Clinton Township, MI, an automation and washer manufacturer and maker of conveyor equipment, extensively researched better ways to bring its products to the marketplace, mainly for automotive and Tier One suppliers, including metalforming companies. To that end, the company recently implemented ETO enterprise-resource-planning software from Encompix, Cincinnati, OH, and is beginning to see substantial internal process improvements related to the implementation, according to Bill Jurek, HMM materials manager. “This ETO ERP system has assisted in analyzing in detail the material costs, schedules and releases to the floor,” he says. That has allowed the company to build products on time and to the budgeted requirements, bringing improved timing on deliveries to customers.

Top 10 Medical Billing questions answered.

October 29th, 2008

1–What is Medical Billing?

Medical Billing is the process of submitting and following up on claims to insurance companies in order to receive payments for medical services rendered by a health care provider.

2–What is the Medical Billing Process?

The Medical Billing process is an interaction between the healthcare provider and the Insurance Company. After examining the patient, the doctor maintains a medical record. This Record includes the patients’ symptoms, clinical findings, and diagnosis and treatment details. Following these details a medical coder or a billing specialist provides a medical code for this record. This billing code is then submitted to the Insurance Company. The Insurance Company then proceeds with the claim.

3– What about the Payment?

Based on the amount negotiated by the doctor and the insurance company, the original charge is reduced.

4–What about the Billing Quality?

Billing Quality is measured in terms of timeliness and completeness of payment. The shape of the distribution curve of Accounts Receivable illustrates billing quality. For several decades, medical billing was done almost entirely on paper. However, with the advent of computers it has become possible to efficiently manage large amounts of claims. Many software companies have arisen to provide medical billing software to this particularly lucrative segment of the market.

5–What are the Medical Billing mistakes you should avoid?

Physicians believing that their billing professional care a lot and will not be doing any mistakes is at the head of the list.Take a copy of patients Insurance card. Also a second ID. Secure sign advanced Beneficiary notice when indicated.

6–Tell about medical billing software?

As we know the tens of troubles medical professionals face keeping files, data and reports sorted and made available whenever needed. Medical Billing helps to organize these details and consolidate your all offices together.

7–Can I use medical Billing software from our home?

Yes. All you need is a computer with a broadband Internet connection.

8–Is billing Software easy to use?

Yes. The biggest benefit is that you don’t have to go through multiple databases.

10–What about the cost?

Medical Billing Software is not very costly though. Also there is no long-term commitment for the software use.

Unearth Life Coaching to Gain Incredible Results

October 29th, 2008

Success coaching is a type of therapy that has become very familiar over the last ten years. The term success coaching first became popular in the USA where, together with Neuro Linguistic Programming, it became part of a regenerated phenomenal wave of decidedly proactive therapy modalities.

In many ways both Performance Coaching and Neuro Linguistic Programming are an answer against certain variants of the Humanistic therapy movement, in particular Humanistic Counselling. A criticism of the human-centred approach is that it is extraordinarily reactive and not profoundly proactive. Although all that works wonderful with some clients, with others long periods of no exit in sight or low return for time and effort occur. Success coaching and Neuro Linguistic Programming are both person-centred therapy in stance, focusing on improving a customers well-being rather than looking into the depths of childhood, as in traditional psychology. Their emphasis is, however, deliberately proactive and resolve issues. Get help with stress management with a life coach.

Lifestyle coaching is not about telling the coaching customer what to do. This is a common misconception. Some success coaches are quite successful in their business careers and then make the change to coaching, thinking that they will at most be required to share their pearls of marvellous business wisdom with the lifestyle coaching customer. Sharing pearls of wisdom is more like mentoring a person in a specific environment. Success coaching is instead about life as a whole.

X-Files Stuff in the News!

October 27th, 2008

I have always loved science fiction. I always have and always will. However, I do possess, most of the time, a solid enough grip on reality to let go of my sci-fi love when I put the book down or leave the movie theater.

I mean, I would love for half the stuff I see in sci-fi to be true right now. You know what I am talking about, don’t you? I would love to be able to zoom through “Space the Final Frontier” in the comforts of the Starship Enterprise sipping margaritas with Jean-Luc Picard while watching the stars fly by. Maybe that babe, Counselor Troi, could join us.

Yes, I can tell the difference between truth and reality (sort of). It’s fun to pretend but I know when the pretense stopsor do I?

Another kind of sci-fi on the caliber of the “X-files” has been going on lately and I want to know just what in the name of Agent Mulder is going on?

I wrote a week or two ago about the exploding toads of Germany.

“I cannot get out of my mind the exploding toad phenomenon reported in the Altona district of Hamburg, Germany. This was taking place at the end of April 2005, causing a ghoulish and macabre mess that confused the hell out of scientists. They had taken to calling the district the “pond of death”.

They think they may have solved this little grotesqueness with the explanation of some peckish toad-liver-stealing crows. I don’t buy that at all.

On May 18th, a report appeared in the Associated Press about a scene right out of Hitchcock’s “The Birds” occurred in Houston.

Apparently, some rather miffed Grackles (a large and loud crow-like bird) have gotten it into their little pea-sized birdbrains to attack the good citizens of Houston. These attacks have become so vicious that people are being injured.

“The grackles zeroed in on a lawyer who shooed a bird away before he tripped and injured his face, Jue said. The lawyer was treated for several cuts.” [1] Can you believe this?

One woman was knocked to the ground, according to the article, and had to be helped up by two men who were also attacked. All three had to flee into a nearby building to escape the Grackle attack.

So what set off this flock of Grackles? And note that they are large and loud Crow-like birds. Is there a connection between the toad-murdering crows of Germany and this Houston event? Don’t you want to know?

Then, lo and behold, Reuters’ news service reported that on May 19, a sleepy little Russian village’s lake simply DISAPPEARED overnight! Imagine that! You go to bed telling the wife that you will be up before the crack of dawn to go “Wet a Hook”. You get up, eat a little something, grab the gear, and walk down to the lake, only to find that it is gone–Poof! [2]

I assure you I am not making any of this up. An entire lake was there when the Russians went to bed and the next morning it was gone.

Get this: The article is entitled, “Lake Disappears, baffling villagers”. They find it, what, a little baffling? I wonder if TERRORIZED would have been a more appropriate word? Baffled just doesn’t cut it. I am thinking that an overnight disappearance of an entire lake would elicit a little stronger reaction like,

“Мы тянем наших ишаков из здесь”.

This roughly translates to,

“We are hauling our butts out of here.”

Just what the devil is going on here? Exploding toads in Germany (the explanation was NOT conclusive), vicious people-attacking CROW-like birds in Houston (authorities had to close down that section of the street), then the overnight disappearance of an entire lake.

Just where are Agents Fox Mulder and Dana Skully when you need them?

Property Index Online: the Fantastic Global Property Hub

October 27th, 2008

Regardless the fact that Property Index is generally viewed as a newcomer bureau, starting their business only in March of 2007, they have quick achieved expert status. On closer look, they’re a very undemanding bureau focusing on guiding everyone proposing to sell, buy etc. estate in most popular areas of the world. They guarantee help you out uncover dead-on what’s called for very quickly as well as, of course, sans hassle.

Realty is easily available everwhere these days, one of the coolest areas being land available in Spain. It should really be no problem to pinpoint all the splendid properties for sale in Spain, one explanation for choosing estate here being real estate on the market and the option to live surrounded by such a vibrant populace. This is one of the truly trendy countries these days, and in view of the scenic splendor and the agreeable climate surrounding you here, how could you conceivably go wrong… Realty in Spain is steeped in history, art and culture, this area of the world has long been home to several nations.

Property Index is an online platform that gives buyers access to thousands of properties www.propertyindex.com. Property in Spain is currently booming so browse the range on offer at Property Index.

About 20 years ago you’d find merely a dribble of English in search of properties in Spain. Just ask any one single person who has chosen to remove to Spain and they’ll tell you the same. Many would prefer to see it as a basically irrelevant craze and others prefer to see it as a virtually an infatuation! The people who migrate here may range from young families in search of an exciting life perspective to the retired who intend to rest and enjoy themselves. Do bear in mind, however, that there might be obstructions when trying to acquire properties abroad: there’ll be a hundred steps to manage whether organising, popping in or finalizing the deal. If you only miss one single minor procedure this can initiate sweeping obstructions plus, more important, monetary loss.

As you will assume with this fashionable place, properties might be quite dear in this area and this, of course, is merely on account of the wide spread demand. Nonetheless the homebuyer is patently rather spoilt in terms of choice in a region so great in terms of warm site and great panorama. Doubtlessly it’s got all, stock and barrel, just about anyone might possibly need and more.

The Power Behind ‘Mini-Prayers’

October 24th, 2008

The Power Behind ‘Mini-Prayers’
by Alan Tutt
http://www.KeysToPower.com

We have all heard that our beliefs shape our lives. Some will say that our beliefs will influence the Universe to become what we believe it will be. Others say that our beliefs simply direct the course of our actions, which in turn shape the pathway we take through life. Either way, I’m sure you will see that the more your beliefs allow you to take a rewarding pathway, the more rewarding life will become. And a tool that is used quite often for changing beliefs is called an affirmation.

Affirmations are generally used as a sort of ‘mini-prayer’. If there is something that you want in your life, the general instructions are to repeat an affirmation that basically says that you already have it, and this will influence the causative force (either the Universe or your behavior patterns) to bring it into your life. In other words, if you want a fulfilling relationship in your life (assuming you don’t already have one), then you would repeat to yourself “I am loved by a very special person who makes me feel wonderful. I am in a very rewarding relationship that fulfills my every desire.” By repeating this affirmation, you will eventually find that desired relationship.

Of course, there is much more to the process than this, but you get the basic idea. Whatever affirmation you have decided to work with, the guidelines are to repeat it to yourself over and over again hundreds of times over a period of time, like a week or so. The question that most people have at this point is not “What makes affirmations work?”, but rather “What kind of affirmations will work best for me?”.

Here are a few general-purpose affirmations that may be used to improve your life in all areas. One of the most famous affirmations was developed by a French scientist by the name of Emile Coué, which is “Every day, in every way, I am getting better and better.” Here are a few others.

“I am One with the Universal Mind Power, and so being, I am One with Universal Success. All ideas for my personal success come to me from the Universal Mind in a way that is certain for me to see. I am constantly guided to do the right thing, say the right thing, and be at the right place at the right time.”

“I am Powerful. There is Power in everything I do.”

“Wealth comes to those who serve others.”

“I am more valuable than I think I am.”

“When I’m excited about what I do, others will get excited too.”

“The only failure in life is the failure to try.”

“I am divinely blessed, and my blessings grow every day.”

“As I breathe in, I bring myself closer to God and His absolute Power. As I relax into the Power of God, I am connected into the matrix of creation. I can now set the course of events in my life. The results of my creation bring me much happiness.”

“LIFE IS WONDERFUL!!!”

The Depressive Narcissist

October 23rd, 2008

Many scholars consider pathological narcissism to be a form of depressive illness. This is the position of the authoritative magazine “Psychology Today”. The life of the typical narcissist is, indeed, punctuated with recurrent bouts of dysphoria (ubiquitous sadness and hopelessness), anhedonia (loss of the ability to feel pleasure), and clinical forms of depression (cyclothymic, dysthymic, or other). This picture is further obfuscated by the frequent presence of mood disorders, such as Bipolar I (co-morbidity).

While the distinction between reactive (exogenous) and endogenous depression is obsolete, it is still useful in the context of narcissism. Narcissists react with depression not only to life crises but to fluctuations in Narcissistic Supply.

The narcissist’s personality is disorganised and precariously balanced. He regulates his sense of self-worth by consuming Narcissistic Supply from others. Any threat to the uninterrupted flow of said supply compromises his psychological integrity and his ability to function. It is perceived by the narcissist as life threatening.

I. Loss Induced Dysphoria

This is the narcissist’s depressive reaction to the loss of one or more Sources of Narcissistic Supply – or to the disintegration of a Pathological Narcissistic Space (PN Space, his stalking or hunting grounds, the social unit whose members lavish him with attention).

II. Deficiency Induced Dysphoria

Deep and acute depression which follows the aforementioned losses of Supply Sources or a PN Space. Having mourned these losses, the narcissist now grieves their inevitable outcome – the absence or deficiency of Narcissistic Supply. Paradoxically, this dysphoria energises the narcissist and moves him to find new Sources of Supply to replenish his dilapidated stock (thus initiating a Narcissistic Cycle).

III. Self-Worth Dysregulation Dysphoria

The narcissist reacts with depression to criticism or disagreement, especially from a trusted and long-term Source of Narcissistic Supply. He fears the imminent loss of the source and the damage to his own, fragile, mental balance. The narcissist also resents his vulnerability and his extreme dependence on feedback from others. This type of depressive reaction is, therefore, a mutation of self-directed aggression.

IV. Grandiosity Gap Dysphoria

The narcissist’s firmly, though counterfactually, perceives himself as omnipotent, omniscient, omnipresent, brilliant, accomplished, irresistible, immune, and invincible. Any data to the contrary is usually filtered, altered, or discarded altogether. Still, sometimes reality intrudes and creates a Grandiosity Gap. The narcissist is forced to face his mortality, limitations, ignorance, and relative inferiority. He sulks and sinks into an incapacitating but short-lived dysphoria.

V. Self-Punishing Dysphoria

Deep inside, the narcissist hates himself and doubts his own worth. He deplores his desperate addiction to Narcissistic Supply. He judges his actions and intentions harshly and sadistically. He may be unaware of these dynamics – but they are at the heart of the narcissistic disorder and the reason the narcissist had to resort to narcissism as a defence mechanism in the first place.

This inexhaustible well of ill will, self-chastisement, self-doubt, and self-directed aggression yields numerous self-defeating and self-destructive behaviours – from reckless driving and substance abuse to suicidal ideation and constant depression.

It is the narcissist’s ability to confabulate that saves him from himself. His grandiose fantasies remove him from reality and prevent recurrent narcissistic injuries. Many narcissists end up delusional, schizoid, or paranoid. To avoid agonising and gnawing depression, they give up on life itself.
