Web Design for Newbies… Content Sells… and Sells Again!

August 31st, 2008

Web design!

Before a few weeks ago, when I heard those words, they went into my “other” category!

“Other” people, with “other” educations, with “other” minds — brilliant minds, unlike mine (!) — were the designers of webpages.

Certainly NOT me!

But that was before I ran across a simple process that taught me to do it myself!

This process claimed that I could develop a website.

They claimed it took “no prior web technical experience.”

Sounds like so much fluff, doesn’t it?! (See the result of this process at http://www.ordinaryrunner.com/.)

But here I am, a few weeks later, a new website (of my own!!), with 45 pages of content! And more to come!

And guess what? It makes money. No, not millions(!) in 3 days, like a lot of websites claim. But certainly, slowly and steadily, I’ve built a website that will return profits.

All by following a simple plan, spelled out step by step, that even I (with a basketball coaching degree, no less!) have been able to follow.

I’m still wondering if I’ve really done this.

The best plan for making a website is to write VERY GOOD content for your visitors.

If you’re just out to make money, to gouge customers, etc., then you’re going to be smelled out! Web users are savvy!

You’ve got to deliver a superior product about an area that you know something about, and provide, along with your information, resources for your readers to use.

They have to feel that they are important… And they better be important to you! Keep the focus on the visitor, or they’ll click you off!

The problem is, most people don’t know how to write good content for web users! (Not to mention they don’t know how to do all the technical stuff!) And I didn’t either!

I had to learn.

Another thing: How do I get people to come? I mean, it wasn’t like I could build a store on a busy corner, put out a big flashing sign (“Eat at Bob’s!!”), and wait for people to show up!

I had no idea how to get people to come to a website!

Lucky for me, I learned this technique as well.

And I can’t believe it, but people are starting to come. At first only a trickle… but then more and more.

And I had to learn how to get listed with search engines, and directories. You can’t just expect people to stumble across your website! They’ve got to find you by finding you when they search!

So these are big issues if you’re going to develop a website!

Unfortunately, they’re tough things to learn on your own! There are people out there who know these things, but their services are expensive

Or, I could have tried to learn it all on my own, the old-fashioned way, by trial and error… but that would take hours and hours and hours.

And besides, I wasn’t looking for a way to learn to design a website anyway!

So here, in a nutshell, is what I’ve learned:

1) I must OVERdeliver, and OVERinform with the content of my webpages. If there’s no value in my content, people aren’t going to stick around.

What people are really looking for on the web is information, and they want to find the information they’re searching for.

So when they type in a keyword and get a page of fluff that’s just trying to sell them something, they are immediately turned off.

But…

When they come to your website, and they find not only the info they are searching for, but much more… and helpful links to other valuable websites — Well, they stand up and applaud you!

That creates devoted visitors who return.

2) This kind of content also makes them trust you. You are credible in their eyes.

3) Then (and ONLY then) will they trust you when you recommend a product!

And then, with a quick click on a link on your site, they go to the product or service or information that you want them to find. And often they respond with the very thing you want — a purchase!

One last thing: It actually took work on my part to design my own website. And I’m still learning, and still working!

Promises that you’ll get rich quickly and with no effort are empty ones!

But writing excellent content works!

And if I did it, I know YOU can!!

Take a Mop to Your Meats!

August 28th, 2008

Mops, sometimes referred to as sops or bastes, are liquids that are applied to meats during the slow cooking process of traditional barbecue, to keep the meats moist and add additional flavor. Many traditionalists and competitive barbecue teams swear by their mops almost as much as they do their dry rubs. They get their unusual name from the tool that resembles a small kitchen mop used to apply the flavor baste.

Ingredients used to create mops will vary widely from region to region, meat to meat, and individual to individual, but a few ingredients remain common between them. In order to protect the moisture level of your meat, mops will usually contain some sort of oil to replace some of the fat that is lost during the cooking process. This normally comes in the form of oil or melted butter, both of which are perfect for maintaining moisture as well as adding great flavor. Further adding to the flavor, most cooks will add some of the complementary ingredients, such as the dry rub used to coat the meat, to their mop along with other flavors such as Worcestershire, citrus juices, bacon or brisket drippings, stock, and beer or liquor.

Often cooks will use the marinade they used with the meat as a mop, which is a perfectly good idea, as most marinades contain the basic ingredients required in a mop such as citrus juice, oil, spices, etc. However, it is extremely important to remember that you had raw meat soaking in there, which could translate into contamination of your cooked foods with harmful bacteria. Never use a marinade as a mop without thoroughly boiling the liquid prior to it ever coming into contact with your meat or food.

Speaking of bacteria, it is also really important to keep your mop at a temperature above 140F by leaving it simmering on your grill, smoker, or stovetop. This prevents any continuous transfer of bacteria back and forth from the mop to the meat as it cooks. Plus, keeping the mop warm helps to keep your meat warm rather than quick cool it, and prevents any coagulation of the oils or fats used in the liquid.

The tools used to apply mops will vary as well. Purists will tend to stick with the traditional miniature mop, whereas others will use brushes or spray bottles. The effectiveness of the spray bottle will vary depending upon the size of ingredients in your wet mop. If the pieces are too large, they may get stuck in your spray nozzle. When using a traditional mop or brush, dab the meat, don’t wipe it or paint it like a wall. Wiping or painting the meat will only serve to remove your rub and the flavorful bark that forms during cooking.

When to mop is a question you will hear regularly, and the answer varies as much as the mops themselves. The key to remember is that you shouldn’t lift the lid or open the door to your smoker or grill any more than is absolutely necessary. Every time the pit lid or door is opened precious heat and moisture is lost, which increases the cooking time and the odds for a less-moist end product. To avoid this, it is recommended that you don’t mop more frequently than about once per half hour, preferably once each hour. This will of course depend upon the meat you are preparing, but this is a good, average time to start with as a guide. Foods that are lean, such as chicken or fish, will require more frequent mopping than those meats with more fat, such as a brisket. Also, some smokers don’t require mopping as they create and maintain a consistently moist environment, so read your owner’s manual for recommendations from the manufacturer regarding the use of mops.

Grassroots Leadership Principles – a Review of It’s Your Ship

August 24th, 2008

At the age of 36, Michael Abrashoff was selected to become Commander of the USS Benfold – at the time, the most junior commanding officer in the Pacific Fleet. The immediate challenges that faced him were staggering: Exceptionally low morale with unacceptably high turnover. Few thought that this ship could improve. In many ways, the Benfold was actually an extreme example of the same problems facing many organizations today.

As the new head of his own command Michael only became more resolved. “In my induction ceremony, my predecessor left to cheers. The crew was actually clapping as he and his family departed. I knew then that command and control leadership was dead.”

“A lot of people do whatever it takes to secure the next promotion. All I ever wanted to do in the navy was to command a ship. I did not care if I ever got promoted again. And that attitude enabled me to do the right things for my people instead of doing the right things for my career. Along the way, it was my people that created the results that ensured my next promotion.”

The solution was to establish a system of beliefs that Michael calls GrassRoots Leadership – a process of replacing command and control with commitment and cohesion by engaging the hearts, minds, and loyalties of workers.

In his book, It’s Your Ship: Management Techniques from The Best Damn Ship in the Navy, Michael states that, “The most important thing that a captain can do is to see the ship through the eyes of the crew.”

To Michael, this meant interviewing every single person on his ship, from the most senior officer to the newest recruit — an experience that began to generate the most invaluable ideas, often from the most unexpected sources. For example, through one of these meetings Michael was able to address one of the most demoralizing roles of the crew: relentless chipping and painting had always been a standard task for a ship’s youngest sailors, the individuals that Michael most wanted to connect with. One of these sailors simply suggested replacing the rusting hardware with stainless-steel nuts and bolts.

“I took our credit card and bought the stainless steel hardware that day,” Michael commented. “Those guys didn’t pick up a paintbrush the rest of the time I was on board.” Today, the entire navy uses that process – a solution that began from GrassRoots efforts.

GrassRoots Leadership is a philosophy that empowers every individual to share the responsibility of achieving excellence. GrassRoots Leadership has as its core tenets:

• Lead by Example – GrassRoots Leaders know they must first change their own attitudes and behaviors before expecting their crew to change.

• Listen Aggressively – GrassRoots Leaders don’t simply listen, they hear what their people are telling them. They know that those on the front lines are the most familiar with how operations can be more effective.

• Communicate Purpose and Meaning – GrassRoots Leaders help their crew understand (collectively and individually) how their work contributes to the success of the overall mission, as well as understand how that work supports the personal goals they have for themselves.

• Create a Climate of Trust – GrassRoots Leaders trust and cultivate trust from their crew. Without trust, the barriers that prevent excellent performance will never be lowered.

• Look for Results, Not Salutes – GrassRoots Leaders maximize performance by making their people grow. They succeed only where their people succeed.

• Take Calculated Risks – GrassRoots Leaders know that taking prudent, calculated risks is instrumental in maximizing performance.

• Go Beyond Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) – GrassRoots Leaders look at standard operating procedure as a guideline, because SOP doesn’t change as rapidly as the environment and competition. Therefore, they foster a climate that encourages people to come up with better and more innovative ways to accomplish their mission.

• Strengthen Others/Build Up Your People – GrassRoots Leaders focus on making their people grow and creating an environment where everyone can win, thereby making the entire team stronger.

• Generate Unity – GrassRoots Leaders work to not only change undesirable behaviors but to alter the underlying attitudes. By working toward a mutual respect for everyone, they level the playing field, permitting everyone to perform at their highest level.

• Cultivate Quality of Life – GrassRoots Leaders actively integrate fun into the work experience. They want their crew to have as much fun from 9 to 5 as they do at home from 5 to 9; thereby, gaining the passion, enthusiasm and creativity that they usually lock in their car in the parking lot each morning.

By every measure, these principles were able to achieve breakthrough results. Personnel turnover decreased to an unprecedented 1%. The rate of military promotions tripled, and operating expenses were slashed by 25%. USS Benfold became regarded as the finest ship in the Pacific Fleet, winning the prestigious Spokane Trophy for having the highest degree of combat readiness.

His first book, It’s Your Ship, has sold over hundreds of thousands of copies and is a New York Times and Wall Street Journal Best Seller. While receiving accolades from such business-minded entities as Wall Street Journal, Fast Company, and others, perhaps the greatest testament to Michael’s leadership style is represented by one of his crew, who published the following review of It’s Your Ship on Amazon.com:

Reviewer: EW3 Holly (Davis) Simpson from Louisville, KY December 11, 2003

I am a plankowner* of the Benfold and admired Capt. Abrashoff’s leadership. His superior leadership brought the morale of our ship from just ordinary shipboard life to a ship that many in the fleet wanted to become a part of. Our ship was a show-piece and we were proud to carry out his orders.

What could have been a horribly desolate six months on deployment, including the holidays spent in the Gulf in 97-98, turned into a memorable experience for all, thanks to Capt. Abrashoff who even made UnRep a grand event! We learned from him that although we had a VERY important job to conduct, we were rewarded with pride in our accomplishments. Capt. Abrashoff was a very approachable Commanding Officer, an experience I had never encountered in the military and has been rare while employed with state government. He made an effort to see that his crew not only did their jobs exceptionally well, but that we enjoyed the festivities he provided for the ship while in port.

I have read his fantastic book, reliving all the memories of my Benfold life and have used his leadership knowledge to become a successful professional in the “civilian” world. To the readers who feel Capt. Abrashoff is “arrogant” in his leadership style–I think if you had as awesome a ship as the Benfold to be a part of, you would be extremely proud of it and the leadership that made it such a fine place to spend a few years of your life.

Snoring Problem Cure

August 22nd, 2008

Does anyone in your family have a snoring problem?

I have finally found a cure. About two years ago I started to snore. It got to the point that my soul mate, wife and lover of over 36 years had to leave the room and sleep on the couch. I also had sleep apnea. I would stop breathing and my wife stayed awake to make sure I would start breathing again. In summary she wasn’t getting much sleep at night, and I wasn’t getting much quality sleep either. Either Gila (my wife) was shaking me to get me to breath or I was waking myself up with the noise.

Finally about a year ago I went to the local sleep clinic. Their conclusion was I was a borderline candidate for the positive air pressure masks one wears at night to cure the condition. My wife said “NO” to that idea, as the noise from the machine would be as bad as my snoring. About a year after my visit to the sleep clinic I saw an ad on the internet by accident. It talked about a devise called a “Snore Guard”. I called the doctor at the sleep clinic and asked why he never mentioned this possible solution last year. He said he didn’t bring it up because most dental insurance plans don’t pay for it. It was apparent form his answer that he was purely profit motivated. He would only profit it I purchased the noisy and expensive air pressure devise and was not about to talk about something that he wouldn’t profit from.

To make a long story short, I went to my dentist and got the snore guard. It worked! And to top it off, my dental insurance covered all but about $125. I don’t snore and I don’t stop breathing in my sleep. I feel rested in the morning and best of all, my wife is able to sleep all night for the first time in two years. The dentist said they have about a 80% success rate with this appliance. I was real surprised that I didn’t know about this device sine I was a dental technician in the Army and my wife was a dental technician in the past and her sister is currently a dental technician. I wish I had known about this sooner. The brand name of the appliance that I use is “Silent Nite”. Ask your dentist about it or just the generic term “snore guard” to see what he or she might recommend. Just so you know, I have no affiliation with the maker of the product. There are other similar products on the market and if any of you have experience with those let me know and I will pass on the information. Just one more side note, it was not hard to get used to wearing the appliance at night. It is very comfortable, and easy to put on and take off.

Artificial Nail Fungus

August 21st, 2008

You might think that with an artificial nail fungus would not be a problem, but in reality, fungal nail infection can be even more of a worry when you apply false nails on top of natural nails. This is because fungi grow well in damp airless places, like inside shoes, and on warm sweaty feet, and false nails do restrict the flow of air around the nail. Fungal infections of the fingernails are much less common than toenail infections, so the issue is not a big one, but bear in mind that a natural fingernail covered with a sheet of acrylic, fiberglass, or other synthetic material does not get as much exposure to air.

A fingernail discolored and distorted by fungal growth is not a pretty thing, and when your fingernails look like this it’s tempting to cover up the damage so that other people won’t see it. However, when you apply an artificial nail fungus does not go away, it just gets put out of sight. Untreated, and possibly even more comfortable, it will continue to grow and to destroy the natural nail. It may spread to other fingernails, and toenails, or to the skin around the nails. Eventually, natural nails may disintegrate so badly that it’s no longer possible to apply a false nail, and by this time the appearance of the nail will be very much worse. You need to deal with your fungal infection, not hide it.

One more artificial nail fungus connection comes as a result of the booming nail industry: many women are now visiting professionals to have their false nails applied. They are enjoying nail spas, and getting manicures and pedicures in greater numbers than ever before. Unfortunately, this gives the fungi that invade human nails a chance to spread. Some of the women that visit your nail-care professional already have fungus growing in their finger- and toenails. While they are receiving services, fungal spores contaminate the equipment in the facility, and if the facility doesn’t follow strict rules for cleaning and disinfecting, these spores will still be around when the next customer arrives. Then, with each artificial nail fungus gets a free ride onto a natural nail and another chance to flourish in a comfortable environment. This is not a theory: fungi and other infectious organisms have been spread by nail-care procedures.

If you use artificial nails fungus may become an issue for you. To avoid it, choose a nail-care professional carefully and ask about disinfection procedures, follow recommendations for the care of your false nails, and deal with any symptoms of fungal infection promptly.
