A Beginners Guide To Oolong Tea

July 14th, 2008

Over the last few years green tea has become very popular and is available in most stores and caf©s. It is also used in all kinds of products such as shampoo, face cream, candles and many other daily items. Oolong tea is produced from the same plant, which is called Camellia Sinensis. The difference is that Oolong is a semi-fermented brew whereas green tea is unfermented.

The fermentation process is carried out by a skilled worker who can ferment the tea to many different levels to create different varieties. The leaves are stimulated until the oxidization process reaches the desired level and then cooked to finish the process.

The leaves are further processed after the fermentation to enhance the smell, texture and the flavor. This is done by rolling and rubbing the tea. It it possible to achieve many different levels of tea, and when the processing is over a knowledgeable master of Oolong will check the leaves and give them a grade.

The history of Oolong tells us that it was first produced in Fujian province in China. Some of the finest tea still comes from this area although it is now also produced in many other places including Taiwan, Vietnam and Thailand.

One of the reasons that green tea has become so popular is that there are believed to many health benefits which can be obtained by regular drinking. These benefits are also reported to exist in Oolong and are retained even after the tea is processed. Some of the common benefits claimed are the stimulation of the metabolism and the ability to enhance the digestion.

If you are interested in trying some Oolong then it is recommended to find a quality supplier. There are many sellers on the Internet who can supply good tea and many who can supply not so good tea. The stuff in the local Chinese store tends to be of very low quality and not worth buying. Look for a specialist tea merchant and try a few different ones to find the best quality.

Some of the more popular varieties include Gao Shan, Tie Guan Yin, Vietnamese Golden Buds and Formosa Oolong which comes from Taiwan. Don’t be afraid to get stuck in and try a few varieties. I can tell you that a good Oolong is really a great tea so if you are not impressed with what you buy then shop around for another merchant because the good stuff is out there.

Senior Fitness

July 9th, 2008

Staying fit and mobile plays a large role in senior health. It’s not always easy to maintain fitness levels as we age. Naturally, our bodies change, but we don’t want them becoming immobile! Here are some tips to make your senior years more enjoyable and fit.

As much as possible, continue doing your daily living tasks. Taking a bath, even if it’s just a sponge bath, gives your arms a mini-workout. You’re bending and keeping flexible, which is vital for proper joint health.

Cooking involves peeling vegetables, some walking, bending to reach pots and pans. Don’t fret that you may not be able to do all grocery shopping by yourself. As long as you can continue cooking at home, this allows more chance for movement.

So, we’re continuing our daily tasks, and now it’s time to consider some specific exercise.

Golfing provides fun, a chance for walking, bending, and maintaining flexibility. Even miniature golf allows for some of these tasks, so join the grandkids if you can.

Perhaps getting out to a golf course isn’t possible for you right now. Buy one of those mini-putting greens you can use indoors. Even these will improve your ability to move more freely.

Several times a day, make it a point to stop and work on a flexibility exercise. For instance, stretch your legs while sitting in the recliner. Do five or six mini leg lifts or stretch your arms over your head and hold them there for a count of ten. All activity, even simple ones, increases your ability to move freely and with less pain.

Check with your doctor about the exercises he or she suggests. You may be asked to visit a physical therapist who will work with you on improving your fitness. Therapists have some fun ideas on staying fitter – simple games you can play in your home with your grandkids, like batting a balloon back and forth with a plastic racket. You’ll find yourself enjoying the exercise even more with your children around!

By making a simple choice each day of staying mobile as much as possible, you increase your chances of living a more independent life.

“Thank You” Gifts for Teachers

July 9th, 2008

Teachers add so much to our lives and guide out children with special attention. It always nice to give an appreciation for their thoughtfulness and caring. But what gift would be appropriate and not overwhelm the teacher? Here a just a few:

Fill a basket with things they will need and use all year. Add pens, pencils, notepads, stickers, boxes of staples and paperclips.

Wrap a coffee can with colorful paper and add three or four of your favorite home baked cookies. The plastic lid will keep them fresh for days.

Teachers often burn the midnight candle as they read reports and grade papers. Fill a basket with bags of munchies like peanuts, chips, popcorn.

Make a donation to the local zoo or library in your teacher’s name. Put the donation card in with a note expressing your appreciation.

Teachers are always reading. Get a gift certificate or card at your local book store and enclose it in a note of your appreciation for their help.

Get a apple made of cloth and filled with soft fibers. Have every member of the class sign the apple in ink.

Teachers are always carrying books and papers. Find a satchel bag with an apple or red, white, and blue flag design. Or make a bag with all the school colors.

At the local bookstore, find a bookmark that says what a great teacher he is. Or one that has apples running the length of the bookmark. You may be able to find one with dunce hats or take another plain bookmark and add dunce hat stickers to it.

Buy a glass or ceramic mug and have your child paint an apple and his name on the side.

Have your child create a pencil cup by decorating a juice can with brightly colored tissue paper.

A New Discovery in the Solar World

July 6th, 2008

The researchers at Hahn Meitner Institute in Berlin, Germany, have invented a new type of solar cell that is very thin and made from inexpensive materials. In collaboration with a colleague in the United States, this new device will be much cheaper to make and will use less-expensive semiconductor materials than conventional solar cells. This remarkable new breakthrough in solar cell technology had its details published in the Institute of Physics journal Semiconductor Science & Technology. The two scientists involved have used a layer of titanium dioxide that is full of tiny pores and therefore, a much more efficient device for harvesting the sun’s energy.

It begins with an extremely thin layer of light-sensitive, cadmium telluride (CdTe) that forms the base for the solar cell on top of the porous titanium dioxide which is supported on a sheet of glass. On the back of this sandwich, they connected electrical contacts. The cadmium telluride layer absorbs the sunlight and the energy is converted into an electrical current which is tapped off using the electrical contacts. Inside the titanium-dioxide layer, a light bounces around inside the tiny pores and is scattered back into the cadmium-Telluride layer, thus making the device more efficient. This makes it 50 times more effective than a similar cell based on nonporous support material!

Typical solar cells produce between 0.5 and 1 V voltage. In this application, several cells are connected in series to provide higher voltage as needed. The inventors of this remarkable new solar device found if they alloyed the CdTe with mercury they could actually boost the current to 15 milliamps. Current solid-state devices can not offer the promise of renewable energy at a much lower cost, but this new invention does! There are bugs to be worked out of this new invention, but it offers promise of renewable energy at much lower cost.

Mother Was Right

July 4th, 2008

Eat Your Fruits and Vegetables. It is almost impossible to get too much of these foods. They are full of vitamins, minerals, antioxidants and phytonutrients, as well as high in complex carbohydrates. And fruits and vegetables are an important source of fiber, as well. Even the much maligned potato, eaten baked with the skin on, is full of vitamins C and B6, potassium, and nearly 5 grams of fiber!

When eaten raw, the enzymes that most vegetables and fruits contain help the body process foods better. Enzymes are an essential part of our diet, and if it is not found in food, the body must draw from its store of energy to produce enzymes for digestion, instead of other important jobs, such as fighting disease.

Phytochemicals are nutritional substances that recently have been in the news frequently. These are naturally occurring chemicals in plants that are thought to possess disease-fighting properties and play a potentially important role in fighting cancer and heart disease. Recent research demonstrates that they stimulate enzymes that breakdown carcinogens into harmless substances, and appear to be particularly protective against stomach and intestinal cancers.

Most whole foods contain phytochemicals, including whole grains, beans and herbs. Garlic and cruciferous vegetables like broccoli, are some of the richest sources of phytonutrients, as well as fruits like blueberries, cherries and apples.

If you have hypothyroidism (an underactive thyroid), go easy on the raw cruciferous vegetables (such as broccoli, cabbage, cauliflower, kale, brussels sprouts and rutabagas.) They are believed by some to help depress the thyroid function when eaten raw. But don’t avoid these important vegetables, just be sure to cook them. On the other hand, if you are suffering from hyperthyroidism (an overactive thyroid), you should eat plenty of raw cruciferous vegetables.

Many studies have shown that increasing your vegetable and fruit intake may dramatically reduce or even prevent other chronic diseases, such as cardiovascular disease. Some scientists are now recommending up to nine servings a day of fruits and vegetables.

To get the most from your diet, try to eat a variety of different fruits and vegetables. Choose leafy greens often, lots of berries, and try to eat as many colors as you can, since every color of fruit or vegetable will give you different benefits.

The Japanese have a tradition of choosing foods with five different colors and flavors for their meals. The five colors they include are yellow, black, white, green, and red. The five flavors included are sweet, spicy, salty, bitter and sour. Take an example from the Japanese and think variety. Be daring– try out new foods and food combinations.

The Plain Truth About the “Lost Ten Tribes” and Why You Need to Know!

July 3rd, 2008

The United Kingdom of Israel split in two during the reign of Solomon’s son, Rehoboam. The Northern Kingdom of Israel was composed of 10 tribes, headed by the tribe of Joseph, in their new capital called Samaria. The Southern Kingdom of Judah continued to rule from Jerusalem, with the Royal House of David presiding over them. Both sinned against the God of Israel and were patiently warned by the prophets, but Northern Israel fell first and was deported by the Assyrians approximately 130 years before Judah was conquered by the Babylonians and the Temple destroyed (2 Kgs. 17).

After 70 years, a small number of Jews returned and restored Jerusalem and built the Temple. The Jews had been deported to Babylon and were from the Southern Kingdom of Judah. The Northern Israelites had been taken captive earlier to other areas (2 Kgs. 17:6) and have never returned. If you check the records of those who returned from the Babylonian exile it becomes clear that only those from the Southern tribes of Benjamin, Levi and Judah returned. Some carelessly assume that just because they’re sometimes referred to as sons or children of Israel that it means they were from the Northern Kingdom of Israel. However, Jacob-Israel had twelve sons who were the patriarchs of the twelve tribes. Every Jew is an Israelite, an ethnic descendant of Jacob-Israel, but not every Israelite is a Jew!

It is historically and biblically important to make this distinction between Jews and Israelites and to be careful not to blur their identities (Ezek. 44:23). After all, God has devoted four books of the Bible to do just that!

But did God intend for Northern Israel to remain lost? Since we acted like pagan Gentiles God let us lose our spiritual minds and think we’re Gentiles, but was the punishment for our religious sins supposed to last forever? Didn’t God promise that He would preserve Israel’s unique identity even though they were scattered throughout and among many nations? Clearly God has never lost sight of who the “Lost Tribes” really are and where they’re located today: “For, lo, I will command, and I will sift the House of Israel among all nations, like as corn is sifted in a sieve, yet shall not the least grain fall upon the earth” (Amos 9:9).

If God’s aware of a sparrow’s condition, certainly He’s more concerned with collective Israel’s affairs, especially since we’re beloved for the fathers’ (Abraham, Isaac and Jacob) sakes. Yet we see grief-stricken Israel feeling helpless and hopeless, dead to history, cut off from their roots, having given up any hope of being restored to national life, being reassured by God Almighty that He will restore their physical identity!

Once God begins the healing process, the life-giving spirit of reconciliation between Judah and Israel will result in our restoration as a United Kingdom, One Nation under God! God will restore us to our ancient homeland and revive the Davidic monarchy to rule with but under Messiah. God’s Sanctuary will again be found in Jerusalem, and shine as a sign to the whole world, since He’ll return home with the exiles (Ezek. 36).

Israel was only to remain lost until just before Messiah comes. That’s when we would begin to fulfill our tribal destinies as prophesied by Jacob and Moses (Gen. 49; Deut. 33). The sons of Joseph, the Anglo-Saxons, have fulfilled the prophecies like no other “claimants” to Israel’s inheritance can: Manasseh has become the single great nation of the United States, and his brother Ephraim has become the British Commonwealth of Nations (Gen. 48:19), as clearly brought out in The United States and Britain in Bible Prophecy, influenced by Herbert W. Armstrong, one of the greatest proponents of this biblical truth.

After our prophesied 2520 years of exile, Israel began to grow and multiply and be blessed around 1800-1803. A Jewish Homeland reveals how our Jewish brethren also came into their own after the time of their punishment came to a close, and boldly declared their statehood in 1948, holding the Promised Land in trust for all Twelve Tribes (Rom. 3:2).

Joseph and Judah are the top two leaders of the twelve tribes of Israel. It was around the ordained time that God began to bestow Joseph’s Birthright that He began to restore Israel’s identity among both the Anglo-Saxons and Jews (I Chron. 5:2). Some have embraced this wonderful truth and consequently have drawn closer to each other as brethren, but others have foolishly allowed Satan to create enmity and alienate us. Soon such “sibling rivalry” will be a thing of the past (Isa. 11:13).

Some rabbis/ministers have stubbornly refused to search for the “Lost Ten Tribes” and have left them to wander in their pagan Gentile ways and days! GOD HOLDS MINISTERS RESPONSIBLE FOR NOT HELPING TO RESTORE ISRAEL’S ROOTS AND RESPONSIBILITY! (Ezek. 34:4). He’ll personally cut them off from the pulpit and strip them of their duties! They’ve proven themselves unworthy of shepherding God’s people Israel and have forfeited their future as leaders.(Ezek. 34:10; Matt. 12:30). Nevertheless, God has raised up others to accomplish this urgent “search and rescue” mission (Ezek. 34:16).

Surely God wouldn’t leave His Church in the dark about Israel’s identity, especially since the Gospel should go first to Israelites and then to Gentiles. And the Gospel is ONE BIG PROPHECY! .

Thankfully, there are a growing number of groups and organizations, books and articles, both Christian and Jewish, that are assisting this GREAT WORK OF ISRAELITE IDENTIFICATION. They are helping to proclaim: “I am Joseph your brother” (Gen. 45:4). The Jerusalem-based Brit-Am Israel organization (founded by the Israeli Orthodox Jew Yair Davidiy) is a pioneer among our Jewish brethren.

God reveals our Israelite identity and expects us to help restore our brethren to their biblical senses (Isa. 42:22; 51:1-2). Those ministers who fail to respond to God’s call to search and rescue Israel have robbed them of a right relationship with God and our forefathers, substituting pagan hollow days for God’s holy days (Isa. 63:16; Hos. 5:7; Malachi 4:4-6). They’ve stubbornly put their idolatrous traditions above God’s commands, preferring doctrinal darkness and captivity over Messiah’s spiritual light and freedom.

Nevertheless, a number have been called from the womb to help restore Israel’s identity and religion (Isa. 49:5-6), blasting Babylon and clearing away the stumbling blocks of religious confusion (Isa. 57:14; 58:1, 12). Even if our people as a whole reject the plain truth for popular error (2 Chron. 30:5-11), a precious few will always respond to God’s call to forsake Babylon (traditional Christianity/Jewish myths) and return to our biblical roots and responsibility (I Kgs. 18:21, 36-37; Rev. 18:4).

It’s vital to know who Israel is so they can return to the biblical faith once delivered. Why? To enable them to be spared from “the Time of Jacob’s Trouble,” the “Great Tribulation” that is prophesied to fall especially hard upon our heads. God expects us to work together to remember our Hebrew roots and responsibility, and to lead and direct our Israelite nations in the right direction (Jer. 31:21).

In order to warn Israel about the many prophecies that preview our coming captivity (due to our idolatry and immorality), it was first necessary for God to restore our identity. God has now restored our identity, He’s again warning our nations, and it’s up to us what will happen next.

May we take God’s Word to heart, return to the God of our fathers, and have hope: “If my people, which are called by my name, shall humble themselves, and pray, and seek my face, and turn from their wicked ways; then will I hear from Heaven, and will forgive their sin, and will heal their land” (2 Chron. 7:14).

Resume Writing FAQs: When Should I Send Resume Follow Up Letters?

July 3rd, 2008

I’m often asked how long you should wait before following up on a resume submitted in response to a telecommuting position. You want them to know you are interested, but there is a fine line between pestering the hiring manager and showing your enthusiasm. Here are some tips to guide you.

A week is a reasonable time to wait for a reply from the hiring manager. Hiring managers will receive, on average, around 300 resumes in response to a position after just 12 hours of posting it online! Give it a week to calm down and then send your follow up e-mail (because e-mails are less intrusive phone calls).

Make sure to hit the following key points in your letter:

1. Ask if the position has been filled.

2. Reiterate your interest in the position.

3. Express your continued interest in working for their company (in case the position was filled).

4. Ask for an interview.

5. Give them your phone number again so they have it at their finger tips.

6. Thank them for their time and attention (because you know how valuable it is).

Attach and send your resume again as a reminder. If your resume was buried in the pile, they will appreciate the follow up. You will appear to be a focused and motivated professional worth receiving a second review. It might even get you the interview because most jobseekers overlook the power of good follow up!

In addition, if they decided you weren’t a match, this will obligate them to let you know that you were not selected. Then, you can either move on or continue to pursue employment with them at a later date. You never know – the new hire might not work out for them.

If you need help creating your resume follow up letter, here is a sample template I found by Heather Eager of ResumeLines.com (www.resumelines.com).

http://resumeasap.blogspot.com/2005/12/need-interviews-sample-letter-for.html

Change it to meet your needs and to make sure you hit all six key points discussed above.
